HYANNIS - A 75-foot-tall structure used to wash
gravel caught fire yesterday, gushing plumes of smoke visible across the
mid-Cape into the air.

Two workers at the top of the gravel-washing pla=

were using a torch to cut down a screen for repairs when the rubber lining =

the screen caught fire, said Dave Peterson, one of the plant managers.
"It appears to be accidental at this
point," Barnstable Fire Chief Robert Crosby said as an aerial tower pu=
