NO QUARRY IN BERKLEY!

Home

Cape Cod Aggregates (CCA) has proposed a 45 acre quarry that will be, at its deepest point, roughly 250'  deep in a residential neighborhood.

We are a group of concerned citizens living in beautiful Berkley Massachusetts who are opposed to a proposed quarry to be located in a residential neighborhood. The quarry is being pursued by the new owners of the former Freetown Sand and Gravel operation on Bryant Street.

ARTICLE 23 PASSES by an overwhelming majority!

Thank you to all who voted YES on this article.

Latest Updates:

6/5/10 : Households in Berkley have received a mailing from JR Precast stating that Article 23 is anti-business. NQIB does not agree.

FACT:   Article 23 is taking a step to protect Berkley’s groundwater. It will not interfere with construction of septic systems, wells, agriculture or other properly permitted uses. It will not raise your taxes.

MYTH:   It’s anti-business, and anti-Berkley

FACT:   Freetown has received only $100,000 in tipping fees from CCA since 2007.

MYTH:   A quarry will solve our financial problems.

FACT:   Blasting occurs on the Freetown property 1 - 2 times each week.

MYTHIt's hardly noticeable.

Please consider voting in favor of Article 23 in the June 2010 Berkley Town meeting.

5/19/10:  The revised text of the bylaw is highlighted in yellow. It can be viewed here.

Passing this article is a step in the right direction to protect our groundwater.

6/23/09:  While winning the majority vote, Article 37 missed passing the required 2/3rds vote by 10 votes. Thanks to all who attended the town meeting in support of NQIB. Keep in mind, CCA still has no permit in Berkley. The vote simply denied our petition to restrict mining in our residential zoning laws. We believe the primary reason that some people voted against the article was some confusion with regard to a conflict with the soil board bylaws.  Stay informed by joining our mailing list at information@noquarryinberkley.org

6/19/09:  Proposed text of Article 37. Definition of residential zoning.

6/19/09:  CCA sends out a plea to vote "NO" on Article 37 via US Mail to Berkley residents. Get the facts here! Vote YES on Article 37.

Freetown residents have expressed their opposition and have joined our cause. ALL ARE WELCOME!

What We Do

Our purpose is to inform residents, share research, recruit help and organize a coordinated effort to stop the quarry.

We feel that, although only abutters were notified of their "soil alteration" application, the ENTIRE town should be informed since it will be dealing with this operation for years to come.
