Cape Cod Aggregates (CCA) has proposed a 45 acre quarry that will be, at its deepest point, roughly 250' deep in a residential neighborhood.
We are a group of concerned citizens living in beautiful Berkley Massachusetts who are opposed to a proposed quarry to be located in a residential neighborhood. The quarry is being pursued by the new owners of the former Freetown Sand and Gravel operation on Bryant Street.
6/23/09: While winning the majority vote, Article 37 missed passing the required 2/3rds vote by 10 votes. Thanks to all who attended the town meeting in support of NQIB. Keep in mind, CCA still has no permit in Berkley. The vote simply denied our petition to restrict mining in our residential zoning laws. We believe the primary reason that some people voted against the article was some confusion with regard to a conflict with the soil board bylaws. 6/19/09: Proposed text of Article 37. Definition of residential zoning.
6/19/09: CCA sends out a plea to vote "NO" on Article 37 via US Mail to Berkley residents. Get the facts here! Vote YES on Article 37.
6/19/09: Another death in Quincy quarry. An example of the attractive nuisance quarries pose to residential neighborhoods. Video
6/02/09: CCA blasting makes the news again. This time the Roxbury quarry. Boulders land in neighbors yard and deck. These are the SAME people who came to the Soil Board meeting telling us how they follow the standards and blasting is very"safe". Unbelievable. Made the 10:00pm FOX 25 newscast last night. Watch the video here.
5/29/09: Town Meeting has been postponed from June 1 to June 22, 2009.
5/22/09: We can stop quarries from invading our residential neighborhoods with the passage of article 37. Please commit to attending the meeting and voting YES on this important issue. See the text of the article here.

12/4/08: Angry residents attend Freetown Selectmen meeting. Press coverage is here.
11/30/08: Blasting notices were sent by the insurance company hired by CCA for blasting in Freetown. CCA does not have blasting permits for Berkley. These notices were distributed to Freetown and Berkley residents attached to the outside of mailboxes. See the press coverage here.
7/28/08: In early July a telephone survey was conducted to gauge the opposition to the quarry. It was likely designed and funded by CCA. The survey was misleading in that it inferred a quarry was already approved and they were expanding it. The quarry is not yet approved nor is there even an application pending in front of the town. CCA has no permit in Berkley for any soil alteration currently. We do expect another application to be filed soon. We will alert those of you who are on our mailing list. Please send an email to information@noquarryinberkley.org to be added to the list.
5/14/08: CC's letter to the board can be read here.
5/14:08: Thanks to all who attended last night's meeting on our behalf! We have great people in town who really care about the quality of life in Berkley and Freetown. For those who did not attend, once again our experts were not given the chance to speak on our behalf at at the 5/13/08 soil board meeting. The soil board abruptly closed the hearing without allowing our paid attorney and hydrologist to speak or present any materials to them when CCA withdrew their current design as proposed without prejudice. CCA will resubmit a new design within the next 6-8 weeks to the soil board for reconsideration. This is a temporary victory for NQIB but by no means is the battle over. We are now waiting for the new application to be submitted. See our press coverage here. Please check back frequently for updates and send us an email to be added to the mailing list to stay in the loop! Thanks for your support!

05/12/08: Residents voiced their concerns about having many of our signs removed by local officials at the Selectman's meeting on 5/6. Highway Dept official Scott Fournier was in attendence and defended his actions as "we do this 2-3 times per year to clean up the town". Residents weren't buying his story and claimed he came on thier property and removed signs illegally. Many were upset that their freedom of speech rights were violated. Residents also claim Mr. Fournier has a conflict of interest in this issue. He has agreed not to remove any signs on trees at least 6 ft from a property line or a staked sign no higher that 3 feet tall. The meeting was covered in an article in the Taunton Gazette on 5/7/08 but it is not available online. Replacement signs are available. Email us at information@noquarryinberkley.org

04/29/08: 4/28 Soil Board meeting was postponed with 200+ residents in attendance due to a soil board member's absence. See the article in our Press Coverage. The meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday 05/13/08 @ 7:15pm at the Berkley Community School Gym. Mark your calendars - Please attend! Thank you!!
04/29/08: The highway department decided to remove many of our signs stating they were on 'town' property and considered 'littering'. This includes signs on trees or staked within 10 feet of the road on your personal property. Apparently, political signs are not considered litter. Signs on mailbox posts were not affected. For replacement signs please email us at information@noquarryinberkley.org

What We Do
Our purpose is to inform residents, share research, recruit help and organize a coordinated effort to stop the quarry.
We feel that, although only abutters were notified of their "soil alteration" application, the ENTIRE town should be informed since it will be dealing with this operation for years to come.
Where we now stand...
We have had three meetings thus far with the soil board. Each of them were continued to address resident concerns and CCA waiver modifications.
